Today's Tonic: You vs. Super-You

“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.”~ George Bernard Shaw

Kobe had the Black Mamba.

Lady Gaga has Jo Calderone.

Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce.

Eminem has Slim Shady.

These aren't just cool nicknames or their friends. These are their alter egos — secret identities that helped them show up exactly how they want to. 🦸

Determined. Confident. Fearless Creative. Authentic.

Why did they need to use alter ego in spite of being so talented?

I guess feeling trapped by your own doubts is a universal struggle. Even champions and celebrities face it.

But the only difference is how they deal with those struggles.

They create & tap into their second personality, their alter ego.

As Kobe Bryant once said -

"When I step on that court, I become that. I am that killer snake. I'm stone cold, man."

And you can create your alter ego too.

It's like having another side of yourself.

By thinking of this different side of yourself, you may feel free to do things you might not otherwise do.

You might find the courage to speak on a stage.

You could explore your artistic side and express yourself in new ways.

Or, you might become more confident in the workplace, taking on challenges that previously seemed too intimidating.

But creating and adopting an alter ego is more than an imaginative game. It's a psychological tool that allows you to selectively amplify qualities within yourself. ✨

Give it a try and see how it impacts your life:

  • Identify your obstacles: Think about what's holding you back in your daily life. Is it fear of speaking in public? Lack of confidence at work? Write these down, so you know what you're dealing with.

  • Visualize a fearless you: Imagine a version of yourself who isn't afraid of those things. What does this confident you look like? What would this part of you do differently?

  • Name your alter ego: Your alter ego needs a name. It makes it feel more concrete. Pick a name that resonates with the qualities you want in it.

  • Create a symbol or token: Choose something physical like a ring, a bracelet, or even a specific tie or scarf. Wear it when you want to channel your alter ego. It serves as a tactile reminder of the powerful you.

  • Write down your alter ego's qualities: Detail what makes your alter ego strong, fearless, and able to tackle the obstacles you've identified. Keep this list handy.

  • Practice in small ways: Start using your alter ego in small situations first. If you're afraid of speaking up, practice speaking assertively with a friend or in front of a mirror using your alter ego's qualities.

  • Apply it to bigger challenges: As you become more comfortable, use your alter ego to tackle more significant challenges in your life. Remember the qualities you wrote down and apply them.

So… the next time you face a challenge —-

Will you face it as yourself and risk remaining trapped within your known limitations?

Or will you channel your alter ego & conquer the obstacles? 🦸

The choice is yours, and the power is within you.
