Today's Tonic: WHY Shouldn't I Keep It?

Have you ever crushed an entire pint of ice cream in one go?

It’s amazing.

Two bites in, and you’re riding a roller coaster of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin surging through your brain.

Then, completely letting go—you say, “Yup! I’m going to finish the whole thing straight out of the carton, and to hell with the consequences.”

Sounds like fun.

It IS fun,

Heck — and the repercussions of eating a whole pint of ice cream in less than 10 minutes aren’t that dire.

You aren’t really taking a huge risk here.

You aren’t going to lose your job, crash your car, or bet your family’s life savings on a game of blackjack.

Soooo… why isn’t everyone eating ice cream by the pint every night?

Chemically, everything about the experience is telling us it’s a good thing, but the vast majority of people don’t abuse it.

Why?

What drives people to steer away from things that can bring them instant satisfaction?

The answer is: you have to find a really really good reason not to.

When I finally stopped chewing the calluses off my fingertips, it was only because I was rock climbing (something I love) and not having them was messing up my performance. Something else was more important to me and I was finally able to break the bad habit.

Finding your WHY keeps your instant gratification impulses in check.

It’s your guiding light in a stormy sea.

If you want to break a habit that’s unhealthy, then find your WHY — and make it something you care deeply about…

Your reason why could be:

👉Your kids.

👉Your fitness.

👉Writing a book.

👉Playing guitar.

👉Achieving a goal.

Literally, ANYTHING can be your reason why, just so long as it gives you a sense of purpose and it stops you in your tracks when you’re about to do something that will hinder its progress.

So…

What is your WHY?
