So Good...

...they can’t ignore you.

The Daily Habit For Doers

“Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

- Steve Martin

Comedian Steve Martin said this quote on the Charlie Rose show in 2007.

He said it in response to the questions he often gets from young comedians or actors who are trying to “make it” in showbiz.

The answer he gives them is not what they want to hear because they want to hear shortcuts like:

🟡Here is how you get an agent.

🟡This is how you write a script.

🟡Here is how you get an audition.

He always unflinchingly tells them, “Be so good, they can’t ignore you.”

His advice is the beginning of a road that many aren’t willing to walk, and most people ignore it.

But he’s right.

See, the people asking for advice have a problem they aren’t aware of.

They want to experience high levels of success, but they only possess average skills

They’re so worried about “making it” that they haven’t stopped to think about what it is they need to deliver when the time comes to perform — they’ve sacrificed the process in blind pursuit of the goal.

When you excel at what you do, when you’re undeniably skilled and proficient, opportunities and success will naturally follow.

Rather than seeking shortcuts, focus on being the absolute best in your chosen field.

When you're that good, the industry will take notice.

That means…

👉Dedication: Commit. Again and again.

👉Continuous Learning: Never stop. Always evolve.

👉Resilience: Fall? Get up. Every time.

👉Focus: Eliminate distractions. Laser in.

👉Adaptability: Change happens. Roll with it.

👉Feedback Reception: Listen. Learn. Improve.

👉Networking: Build relationships. Not just contacts.

👉Time Management: 24 hours. Use them wisely.

👉Passion: Love what you do. It shows.

It took Steve Martin ten years of honing his craft and not giving up before he was launched into the spotlight, but by then, he was a master of comedy, and to outsiders, it looked like an overnight success.

So ask yourself…

What moves are you making today to become the name they can't forget tomorrow?

If you’d like to dive deeper into this concept, check out Cal Newport’s book So Good They Can’t Ignore You.

In it, he discusses why people struggle to find work they love and then how to master their craft once they find it.
