The Daily Habit For Doers

“But you are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. If someone isn't making you stronger, they're making you weaker.”

- Tim Ferriss

When you think about changing something in your life — say, a habit or a behavior — if you’re like most people, then you probably attack it head-on.

You go on a diet.

You create an exercise plan.

Maybe you get a watch to track your steps or an app to track your screen time.

But something we don’t give enough credit to is our environment

I’m consistently amazed how, in my own life, the environment I’m in directly impacts my health and wellbeing.

Here, for example, are a few ways that moving to Portugal has impacted my daily routine…

  • Walk well over 10k steps per day taking Andie to school and walking to gym, etc.

  • Working out 5 days per week.

  • Eating wayyyyy healthier (and tastier food to be honest).

  • Spending time every weekend at a park somewhere in the city.

  • Starting working out of the house more at coffee shops and LOVING it.

  • Learning a new language (slowly lol).

Sure…

Hypothetically, I could have done all of those things when we lived in Hawaii… but I didn’t.

Our lives were easy and my environment didn’t push me to do those things — and when your environment doesn’t push you, it’s often far too easy to just stay right where you are.

A lot of people will tell you to work harder, be more disciplined, stop making excuses… but you shouldn’t discount how big an impact your environment has on who you are. Sometimes it’s easier to change your environment than it is to change your lifestyle… and it has the same effect.

Of course, you might not be able to pick up and move to a new country.

In a Forbes article titled, If You Want To Change Your Life, Change Your Environment, Amy Blaschka encourages us to ask ourselves two simple questions…

  • Who Is In My Top Five? — “These people might include mentors from whom you can learn new skills, colleagues who cheer you on when you get discouraged, or friends who hold you accountable to your goals. Having in your "top five" positive, encouraging people who lift you up and support your dreams will dramatically improve your chances for success.”

  • Where Do I Hang Out And What Do I Do While There? — “No place is inherently good or bad, but you should pay attention to how you feel while you're within those spots, and note if that feeling changes when you leave them. Are you motivated or drained? If it's the latter, and you want to make progress, something's gotta give; it's time to make a change.”
