Ass-u-me-ing

The Daily Habit For Doers

Daily News for Curious Minds

“I stopped watching the news, so sick of the bias. Was searching for an alternative that would just tell me WHAT happened, with NO editorializing. I found it. It’s called 1440. It assumes you are smart enough to form your own opinions.”

Today's Tonic: Ass-u-me-ing

If we are honest with ourselves, we have to admit that sometimes our assumptions and preconceived notions are wrong, and therefore, our interpretation of events is incorrect. This causes us to overreact, to take things personally, or to judge people unfairly.

- Elizabeth Thornton

How many times have not only your first impression — but other impressions — been wrong?

I can’t count the number of times I’ve personally misjudged someone after a single interaction… only later to become good friends with them.

Or misjudged whether a client was serious about working with me…

Or misjudged the intention behind someone’s off-hand comment…

Our impressions say more about us than they do about others.

And they’re often wrong.

The next time you make a snap judgment about something or someone… just remember: you might be wrong. And it’s often better to act in favor of the most optimistic assumption until you know otherwise.
